From Marc - IT Manager:

"It was back in college during midterm exam week when my grandmother's sister passed away. My family planned to attend the wake, but I decided to stay home that night to review for my exams the following morning. Around 9 PM, my mom and sisters left for the wake, and I studied until about 11 PM before going to bed.

At that time, we had one large bedroom with our beds facing the door, which was located at the top of the stairs. Our stairs had a light that stayed on every night, and I left the bedroom door open as I fell asleep.

Around 2:30 AM to 3:00 AM, I heard someone coming up the stairs. I opened my eyes, expecting it to be my mom or sister returning from the wake. When I looked at the door, I saw a tall girl with long hair, wearing a white tank top and white shorts with a red heart pattern. Still groggy, I assumed it was my mom. I continued watching her for about five minutes, feeling increasingly nervous as she slowly turned her head to face me. Just before I could see her face, the bedroom door suddenly slammed shut.

I jumped up and rushed to the door to open it, but the girl was gone. I checked the living room—no one was there—and even looked at the main door, which was still locked. I returned to the bedroom and tried to go back to sleep.

When I woke up around 8 AM, my mom and sisters had just returned home. I asked if they had come back around 2 or 3 AM for something, but they said they had been at the wake the whole time. After that night, we often heard someone running around in our bedroom whenever everyone else was in the living room."

From Lindsay - Compliance Coordinator:

"When I was 4 years old, I had an imaginary friend. I called her Angie. She was an older woman, and so sweet. No one else could see her, so my parents just chalked it up to me having a wild imagination being so young. Fast forward to 8 years later, and my dad was cleaning out our basement because we were moving. I was helping him go through old photos, and to my surprise, there was a photo of Angie! I told my dad, and he looked at me and said that's your great grandmother, Angelina."

OCTOBER TEAM MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: NADIR

TEAM MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

This October, we’re excited to spotlight Nadir, a talented Respiratory Therapist who recently joined Access Healthcare LLC. His enthusiasm and expertise are already making a positive impact on our team. Get to know him as he answers the interview questions below!

• How long have you been with Access Healthcare LLC and what made you choose us?

6 months.

• As someone who has been an amazing travel healthcare professional, what would you tell your 15-year-old self?

Don’t be discouraged when you make plans then life happens. If you fall down 7 times, get up 8. Stay prepared-assess, adapt, overcome.

• What’s the most memorable Halloween experience you’ve had as a travel healthcare professional, and where did it take place?

Seeing the patients enjoy the company of each other, as well as the staff. Being able to wear costumes and have fun with the normalcy of most children despite their condition or the hospital environment. This was at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

• What has been the biggest fear you've overcome in your life so far?

Failing. Not making all of those who have me in life and believed in me proud. Being a statistic, and not reaching my full potential or achieving my definition of success.

• What’s one piece of advice you’d give to nurses considering a career in travel nursing, particularly regarding managing change and adjusting to new environments?

Be where your feet are and become familiar with stepping outside of your comfort zone. Challenge yourself to learn something new and get to know someone outside of your scope or profession.

• If you could swap costumes with any character from a Halloween movie or book, who would you choose and why?

The Headless Horseman. I always liked the mystique the character added to being a villain.

OCTOBER’S EDITORIAL PIECE: COMPLIANCE COORDINATOR – ACCESS HEALTHCARE LLC

EDITORIAL PIECE BY LINDSAY

As Halloween approaches, the air shifts, crisp leaves crunch underfoot, and the world seems to awaken with shadows and whispers. It’s a season rich with the duality of fear and festivity, reminding us that the unknown can be both thrilling and daunting. This time of year, compels us to confront our fears. Not just of ghosts and ghouls, but of the deeper uncertainties that life presents.

Dressing up in costumes, we don masks that allow us to explore aspects of ourselves we might otherwise keep hidden. It’s a chance to play with fear, to take the scary and transform it into something playful. Yet beneath the surface, the thrill of Halloween taps into a more profound emotional landscape. One colored by grief, loss, and the fear of the unknown.

Fear can be paralyzing, yet it also teaches resilience. As children, we may have been terrified of the dark or the things that lurked within it. But Halloween invites us to confront that fear head-on. Haunted houses, spooky movies, and ghost stories encourage us to step into the dark, to explore our anxieties rather than shy away from them. It’s a dance with discomfort, reminding us that fear is a natural part of life. It also nudges us to reflect on those we’ve lost, the loved ones whose absence leaves an indelible mark. Walking through neighborhoods adorned with cobwebs and skeletons, I often think of my family’s autumn traditions— me, my sister, my mom and my dad would all go to Linvilla Orchards in PA. There, we would pick out our pumpkins for carving, go apple picking, go on a hayride, get apple cider and caramel apples. In some instances, thinking about these traditions helps navigate grief.

Reflecting on personal experiences, I recall the first autumn and Halloween without my dad, October 2019. Instead of retreating into sorrow, I remember talking to my mom, and reflecting on Halloweens past. My dad was a musician, and when I was much younger, he would play gigs on Halloween eve. For years he would ALWAYS dress up like a clown. I still remember the makeup he used and how silly he looked. Even though I am deathly afraid of clowns (come on, I know I’m not the only one!), seeing my dad dressed up would always make me smile.

One year my sister and I even dressed up like a little old lady and little old man, and I wore my dad’s clothes. My whole family thought it was funny. Talking about my dad, and being able to laugh at memories, felt therapeutic in a way. In sharing those memories with my mom, I realized that grief doesn’t have to be a solitary experience; it can be shared, celebrated, and transformed into a tribute. This duality—fear intertwined with.

Engaging with the spooky and the surreal encourages us to lean into discomfort, to embrace the unknown rather than resist it. Halloween is a reminder that both fear and grief are part of the human experience, and that navigating these emotions can lead us to deeper understanding and connection.

As we celebrate Halloween, let us embrace the fear and the unknown. In the flickering candlelight of a jack-o'-lantern, we find a symbol of resilience—a reminder that even in the dark, there is light. This season, may we navigate our uncertainties with courage and grace, allowing ourselves to feel, reflect, and ultimately grow.
